'On account of' is very common in (British) English, and I'm sure I was using it at twelve years old!
Er, I meant, someone Harry's age probably wouldn't use it in a formal context either. So it's not weird, but it does tell us he's among friends if we missed that in the previous thirtysome chapters. ;)
