Notes on inspiration: Inspired by this wonderful piece of art which was linked to me by Meariver. While this wasn't a direct inspiration, about 3/4 of the way through the story Blackestglass linked me to this post about Luxo the miniature light-painting robot, which is well worth sharing as well.
Notes on rank: I don't believe Sam's rank is mentioned or indicated in the film anywhere; I couldn't find information on it at the various wikis, so I made him a Major, high-ranking enough to suit his talents but not so high ranking he would be unrealistically young.
