As I posted above, what if II is a sequel to V (where Peter's undercover, trying to get something on Adler)? So, Adler gets away before Peter's got enough for a warrant, but Neal's already met Peter (first at the bank, then -- confusingly -- undercover at Adler's) and clearly finds him interesting. Hmm... Maybe Neal's the one who tips Adler to Peter, either deliberately (to get "in" with the guy he's trying to con) or inadvertently ("How long has he been working here? Didn't he used to be FBI?")... Then Adler shows his true colors (violent, sociopathic, maybe sadistic...) after he's got Neal (and maybe Kate, too) under his full control in Argentina. I could see Adler as a sadistic, abusive tyrant keeping Kate and Neal as two beautiful "toys", someplace where his stolen wealth frees him from any constraints... Scary. Poor Neal (and Kate). This could be a great h/c story, too.
