See, in the US, if you don't have cable AND if you don't actively watch BBC America, you would have no exposure to Doctor Who outside of references on The Big Bang Theory. :D Even then, up until about a year and a half ago, the new Doctor Who seasons would air about six months after they aired in the UK.

It's just...not a part of the culture here.
