Group Captain is, however, usually shortened to Captain; at least that was my understanding. Canonically as a con man he was posing as an American volunteer in the RAF, and he's accorded the rank of Captain in that (or at least self-declares it). My assumption is that he volunteered as a Group Captain in WWII, which is where he gets his captain's stripes on his RAF coat.
