No quick fixes for this Doctor, it's true. Which is part of why this one was hard to write, because I LIKE quick fixes, but I know when I can't use them.
The Doctor isn't necessarily hiding his nightmares from Rose -- she's fully aware he has them, and she helps him when she can. But he's trying not to disturb her unduly, so if she sleeps through them he tries to stay quiet and deal with them himself. And of course not worrying her IS a part of it.
The second-hand thing came about in a very weird fashion; I knew in a general sense how I wanted him to dress as a human, but I couldn't work out how he'd have that epiphany for himself in a department store. Especially because he's not the sort who'd follow the crowd -- Tennant did a shoot for Abercrombie, I believe, but it's hard to imagine the Doctor with a brand name on his chest, no?
