He went back, just once. The Doctor always knows what he's doing.

The reaction was predictable. The other Doctor -- him -- the Ninth iteration -- passed the mouth of the alley and then stopped. He came back. He stood there in the light and stared at him, openly stared, stopped and stared. Rose kept going (she always did).

"A Time Lord," Nine breathed. "A real living -- "

He came forward to hug him, and the Doctor ached; he knows the loneliness, because it's his loneliness too.

"Don't touch me," he said, from the shade, and Nine stopped in his tracks. Dark shame and horror seemed to wrap around him, an almost visible thing.

"You know, then. You know what happened at Arcadia," he said.

The Doctor shook his head. "That isn't why."

Realisation dawned. Not two Time Lords; just one, in two places at once.

"You utter fucking lunatic!" Nine said, but he used their own tongue -- a tongue where there was a word for a person who was at once Me and Not Me. A special pronoun for those rare times when you had to talk to yourself. Eillul.

Nine moved forward, arm drawing back, anger clouding his face.

"Punching is touching!" the Doctor cried, lurching backwards. "Punching is touching punching is touching!"

Nine paused. Then he laughed.

"Oh, if I could see the look on my face right now," Nine said, doubling over laughing. "Look at that chin!"

"Look at my ears," the Doctor retorted. "I'm not a picture of grace and good looks myself."

Nine was still laughing, one hand on the brickwork of the alley to hold himself up. The Doctor wanted to touch him, wanted to shake him out of his laughter. Nine recovered slowly, wiping tears from the corners of his eyes.

"Why've I come then? World ending? Eldrich message from beyond?" Nine asked.

"Something like that," the Doctor answered nonchalantly. Nine sobered.

"What is it? Worth risking the reapers for?"

The Doctor jerked his head in the direction Rose had gone.

"Nothing too important. It's about her. Just appreciate her while she stays."

Nine blinked. "Rose? But she promised -- "

"Just -- appreciate her while she stays." He paused. "And buy her some chips. She likes chips."

Nine nodded.

"DOCTOR!" Rose called, from a distance. "WHERE'D YOU GO?"

"G'on then," the Doctor said. "Time's wasting. Off with me."

Nine nodded and stepped out of the alley; his face changed imperceptibly, preparing to turn and say hello to Rose with some facile lie about chasing a cat down an alley.

The Doctor stepped back, into the TARDIS, and closed the door.

"Done with your errand?" Martha asked, looking up from the console.

"Done now," the Doctor agreed.

I, oh. *sniff*

How can you make me laugh so much and then get all sad the very next minute? Because you're brilliant, that's how.

You wrote whofic! I love you forever!

I love that they have a special pronoun for when you talk to yourself. ♥

[identity profile] fleur-de-liz.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooray, Whofic!

Maybe your HP muses will get better if you watch the Shakespeare episode from this past season. Ten makes a couple of HP references and it's fantastic.

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I saw the Shakespeare episode. Like any good academic, I punched the air. :D

DDDDDDDD:

I have nothing else to say.

[identity profile] ola-sw.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. I'm tired so I'll be super organized and efficient:

1. I don't read Whofic, I just don't. No special reason besides the fact that no canon makes me generally confused on what accounts as a fic. Consider yourself a very appreciated first.

2. Eillul. Sounds like the hebrew month. This is me weirded out a bit.

3. I just thought about the Nine meeting Ten scenario, because I pondered Eccleston's not really clear agreement with the BBC. How cool!

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I may actually have taken Eillul, subconsciously, from some language or other. I did used to have a Hebrew calendar...

[identity profile] aura218.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Time's wasting. Awwww.

[identity profile] doomandnachos.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Whofic! Yay!
COME TO THE DARK SIDE. We have robot dogs!

Anyway, you captured both Nine and Ten quite well, and made me want to give Nine a giant squishy hug. Moreso than usual, that is. :D

[identity profile] terrylj.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Sam's writing Whofic!

I think the only appropriate reaction here is SQUEEEEEE!!111!!

(Nine/Rose/Jack porn. You know you wanna.)

[identity profile] ruisseau.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
dude we all wanna ;)

[identity profile] moocow1985.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Aha! Sam writes Whofic! The first of several, I hope.

And now you've officially written fic for every fandom I've been involved with, almost in the same exact order that I've become interested in them. Creepy.

[identity profile] sabra-n.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Punching is touching!" the Doctor cried, lurching backwards. "Punching is touching punching is touching!"

*gigglesnort* Oh, god. That is such Ten. He drives me up the wall, but that's him right there. In my head, this will happen and then Ten will stop screwing with Martha's head by repeatedly talking about how great Rose was.

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that in a cagematch Nine would kick Ten's ass and then eat him.

I'm just sayin'. :D

Fantastic! (sorry, couldn't resist) Really though, that was wonderful.

[identity profile] futuresoon.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha! Lovely! Hits just the right balance between coolness, hilarity, and sorrow that all good Doctor Who stories need. Makes me wonder why I don't really belong to the fandom, given that I love the show so much and I've seen so many great examples of fics for it...

[identity profile] polaris-starz.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
You're writing Whofic now! This is utterly utterly fantastic. Are you watching the show?

"Punching is touching!" the Doctor cried, lurching backwards. "Punching is touching punching is touching!"

Best EVER. I love how spastic Ten is. And I like how you write him, good voice. Would love to see more Whofic in the future.

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I do watch, yes -- it grows on you, kind of like a cocaine addiction. :D

I didn't much like last week's. Though I'm hoping that they take the blonde chick with them when they go. The Doctor does seem to have a thing for blondes lately.

[identity profile] sophiap.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
This made me so very, very happy.

[identity profile] intrikate88.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that was fun. There aren't enough double Doctor fics out there, and yours was really well explained. Good job!

Sam Storyteller drive-by love!

[identity profile] madamechong.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I may be extremely confused, but I was under the impression you disliked Who?

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it's dislike, really (and it does grow on you, though this past week's was lame). I don't think I'll ever be particularly rabid, but it's entertaining in its way. :)

[identity profile] lyras.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Oh, lovely. I'm all sniffly now. You've got their characterisations spot on, and I do love the pronoun fun and games!

This is great! I'm not terribly well versed in Who lore and have only seen the new stuff so I don't know if you're referring to anything beyond that or how Time Lord temporality works, but I love the idea of the pronoun "for those rare times when you had to talk to yourself." And I ached for Nine thinking there was another Time Lord there...

Thank you for this. And I hope you write more Who fic. :)

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've not seen anything prior to the first "new" season, but I haven't heard any buzzing about the pronoun, so I think it's probably reasonably kosher :D

I know so little about Doctor Who that my reaction to the word "Whofic" was wondering if it was written in Whoville and I still found that touching.

[identity profile] wanderingwidget.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
WAH! You write doctor fic! You write doctor fic! You write doctor fit!

:: is busy having conniptions ::

I would order more, but I'm still waiting in vain on you to finish that ::coughcough:: house fic that you've 'officially' given up on o_o

Hope springs eternal, y'know.

(P.S. whatever happened to i_blues_joo? And also: tardis icon, because you said you liked it :P)

[identity profile] grenzgestalt.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
This was delightfully fun to read! Whofic never fails to make me happy.

[identity profile] ruisseau.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
This made me a very happy fangirl. One my favorite people writing for one of my favorite fandoms.

I second the nudge towards the Nine/Jack/Rose

Better than coffee

I am a old-school Dr Who fan (my first Doctor was no 5, Peter Davison, waaayyyy back when) and I like the new stuff without losing sanity over it too much. This has a good feel to it- you have caught both Nine and Ten, and their universe perfectly and precisely in such a short fic. Brilliant!
Your story made me very, very happy. Think as happy as you can, and add two suitcases of happy. That is how happy I am, right now.
What a nice start to a tuesday morning that will include several difficult things of a family nature, and also filing. Thank you.

:)*slinks off to re-read grinning widely*

You have that fantastic combination of funny and sad. I laughed, but oh, so very sad. Why are there no emoticons for funny and sad at the same time? Is there a word for that?

[identity profile] sam-storyteller.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Bittersweet?

I tend to use :/ when I think something is sad but not quite sad enough to use :(....
